The philosophy

Seven principles of agentic platform engineering

Platforms succeed when their philosophy is explicit. These seven principles are the load-bearing ideas behind the architecture — each one exists because its absence has a name, and the name is usually “incident.”

01

Agents consume platforms, not raw infrastructure

Agents never receive unrestricted cloud or Kubernetes credentials. They act through golden paths, pipelines, and platform APIs that encode validation, attribution, and reversibility. The platform is the safety surface — bypassing it removes every boundary between intent and blast radius.

02

Intent enters through contracts

Humans and events express desired outcomes — "a PCI payments service, EU residency, staging and prod" — not procedures. The platform determines implementation. Contracts make intent machine-parseable, validate it, and keep the conversation about what, not how.

03

Policy precedes action

Validation happens before mutation, every time. Policy-as-code — deterministic, versioned, testable — not prompts, which are suggestions. An action that cannot show its policy verdict does not run.

04

Identity bounds autonomy

Every agent operates under attributable, scoped, time-bounded authority, delegated from a named principal. No shared service accounts, no borrowed human tokens, no perpetual API keys. What the agent may touch is a property of its identity, not of its prompt.

05

Every action leaves evidence

No invisible autonomous changes. Decision traces, policy verdicts, identity events, and executed mutations are recorded as joined, queryable telemetry at action time. If it cannot be audited after the fact, it does not run before the fact.

06

Autonomy increases progressively

Read → recommend → propose → execute → remediate. Each rung is earned per action class on evidence, is revocable, and carries a paper trail. Autonomy is a ladder with a governance record — never a global toggle set to "on."

07

Humans retain authority over irreversible actions

Bounded, reversible work proceeds autonomously; consequential and irreversible actions wait for human approval. Humans approve narrow, well-contextualized decisions — this diff, these checks, this rollback — never vibes.

Where these principles came from — and where they are going

These principles are architectural opinion, formed by operating governed agent lanes in real engineering workflows and testing the ideas in a reproducible demo. They rhyme with where the industry is converging — policy-as-code, non-human identity, agent observability — and they are published here to be argued with. The reference architecture shows the planes that implement them.
